Sent: How One Ordinary Family Traded the American Dream for God's Greater Purpose
by Hilary Alan

Hilary Alan recounts her family's journey following Jesus. Her family had it all - 2 active kids, high power jobs with the salaries to match, beautiful house, active in their church, etc. When they heard Jesus speak, they sold it all and moved across the world. Hilary writes about the feelings and changes her family went through as they changed their lifestyle and followed God's call. I expected more writing about the process of following, moving, and making the life change. She also includes details about their new life overseas and living in a completely different culture. Sent is a great encouragement to follow Jesus. It reminds me of Matthew 7:22 (from The Message): "Knowing the correct password — saying ‘Master, Master,’ for instance — isn’t going to get you anywhere with me. What is required is serious obedience — doing what my Father wills. I can see it now — at the Final Judgment thousands strutting up to me and saying, ‘Master, we preached the Message, we bashed the demons, our God-sponsored projects had everyone talking.’ And do you know what I am going to say? ‘You missed the boat. All you did was use me to make yourselves important. You don’t impress me one bit. You’re out of here."

My favorite quote from her book is this: "I had to remind myself of what I knew to be true. I kept coming back to the fact that God is God and I'm not. If I really do believe what I say I believe, that God is completely trustworthy, then why am I worrying like this? Isn't that the essence of obedience? When we are in our rightful place and God is in His, and we believe that every one of God's promises is true it is only then that we are free to go wherever He tells is to go and do whatever He tells us to do. We can do that because we know that, without question, He is trustworthy."
